9 Useful Tips on How to Take Care of Your Jewelry

Jewelry is an investment for a lifetime. Every piece is a story that adds sentimental value to it. Because of this, we always want them to last for a long time and pass them down to the future generations to come. If you’re having doubts about taking care of your jewelry, especially Moissanite, our jewelry experts here at Lobeilia will help you.

Here are useful tips on how to take care of your jewelry without having to worry about the unwanted consequences.

1. Know your jewelry.

It is best to familiarize yourself with the type of jewelry you have. Is it gold? Is it silver? What stones does it have? This is for you to know what cleaning you could do or cleaning products you could use. If you are unfamiliar with the type of jewelry you have, ask your jewelry manufacturer.

2. Put it in a jewelry box when not in use.

When you are not wearing your jewelry, keep them inside a closed box. This will prevent your jewelry from being exposed to oxygen, sunlight, and moisture. Exposure from these elements causes silver jewelry to tarnish quickly. Rough exposure can also cause Moissanite diamonds to chip. If you do not have a jewelry box, you can wrap your jewelry in a tissue paper and put it in a Ziploc bag.

3. Use a polishing cloth for a quick clean.

Over time, Moissanite and other gemstones become filmy when dirt and grime accumulate. Give your jewelry an instant shine by gently wiping it with a polishing cloth. A good quality polishing cloth is made of soft and tight-woven material made of 100% soft cotton treated with cleaning and polishing agents. Its soft material prevents your Moissanite diamond, gemstones, and jewelry from being scratched. Polishing cloth is easy to use, and can be used multiple times without damaging your precious jewelry.

4. Use lukewarm water and dishwashing soap when cleaning your jewelry.

Does your jewelry have oils, creams, and other dirt stuck in them? Prepare lukewarm water with a mild dishwashing soap in a bowl, and soak your jewelry for about 10 minutes. This softens the soot stuck in every nook and cranny of your jewelry. After that, rinse it water and thoroughly dry it with a soft cloth before storing it away. Do not use artificial heat in drying it-- just air dry it!

Use lukewarm eater and dishwashing soap.

For gold-plated jewelry, stay away from jewelry cleaners or harsh soaps. These may contain chemicals that could destroy your jewelry. For Moissanite, avoid harmful detergents, cosmetics, and hair products. Although this does not directly damage the stone, it could cause a build-up to reduce the stone’s sparkle and brilliance.

5. Don’t sleep with your jewelry.

A lot of us are guilty of sleeping with our jewelry. However, it is best to stop this habit. According to Jill Maurer, a jewelry designer, sleeping in jewelry can harm the jewelry or you. Why? This can break your necklace chain or lose a gemstone from excessive movements while sleeping. Moreover, an earring might even end up in a person’s ear! Yikes. It is advisable to take off your jewelry at night. You can always wear them in the morning.

6. Separate your jewelry.

Untangling your necklaces from your rings is such a pain... especially when you’re in a hurry to work! You can prevent this from happening by simply separating your jewelry. Moreover, separating jewelry prevents your jewelry from being scratched; Moissanite is a hard stone that can easily scratch other gemstones and other metals. So the next time you want to find your jewelry easily PLUS preventing it from being damaged, store them in their designated place.

7. Avoid the Sun.

Sun exposure causes jewelry to tarnish easily. It could also cause the color  of Moissanite and other gemstones to easily dull when exposed to light for too long! So the next time your outside, make sure to cover your jewelry with something to prevent sunlight from destroying it easily.

8. Store it with chalk.

Surprisingly, chalk helps in taking care of your jewelry. Chalks are inexpensive and can be used to absorb moisture from your jewelry. OR instead of throwing silica packs from your shoe boxes, use it to absorb moisture from your jewelry. Put a chalk or silica pack inside your jewelry box or compartment and let it do its magic!

9. Keep it Simple.

The simpler, the better. As you have noticed, all of these tips can easily be done at home. Using harsh chemicals on your jewelry, especially when you are unsure, can potentially damage it. It is better to be on the safe side and keep your cleaning to a minimum. In fact, you can opt to clean your Moissanite and other jewelry once a month, or whenever you notice it dirty. If you are unsure about what to do, you can go to your local jewelry cleaners and have your jewelry professionally cleaned.

Taking care of your jewelry requires taking extra steps to do so. If you want your investment to last for a long time, make sure to follow these expert tips. It will surely make your jewelry last for a lifetime!
